Observations - Graphite and Charcoal work:

At the beginning of my ‘observations’ workshop, I started by creating initial artist impressions to learn how to properly utilize the working mediums of graphite and charcoal in the style of Jim Dine. This allowed me to understand how to create certain marks for different effects by changing the way I held the graphite pencils or charcoals. The artist impressions that I developed are very similar to the original pieces done by the artist Jim Dine. From these experiments  I managed to increase my understanding of how light interacts with objects when using both graphite and charcoal. To further develop these skills, I completed multiple pieces using my own images of tools.

For my final piece, I created an A0 sized, charcoal drawing of pliers which uses all techniques learnt throughout the ‘observations’ workshop. I greatly enjoyed creating this piece and managed to develop good textures of the metal surfaces. Additionally, a fine-liner was used to draw into the piece creating depth.
